World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – June 15, 2013

The 8th Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is this Saturday, June 15 2013. This important day was established to raise awareness about elder abuse around the world and foster collaboration among agencies, organizations and communities to prevent elder abuse. You can show your support by wearing purple on June 15th, by spreading the word about the evils of elder abuse and by sharing information to raise awareness about elder abuse. The National Long-Term Care Ombudsman Resource Center (NORC) has many resources regarding abuse, neglect and exploitation in long-term care are available on the NORC website.

The Consumer Voice, a national advocacy group, is taking part in a number of activities this year related to elder abuse prevention, including Residents’ Rights Month (October), with the theme of “Speak Out Against Elder Abuse.” To join their efforts, individuals and groups can educate the public about elder abuse for WEAAD by highlighting Residents’ Rights Month and encouraging residents to submit an entry for the 2013 Resident’s Voice Challenge.

In honor of the clients we represent, people injured and whose lives have been taken by neglect and abuse in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, memory care units and other facilities that care for the elderly, Sugarman Law will proudly participate in activities related to World Elder Abuse Day and Residents Rights Month.
