Study Says Patients With Dementia Are Allowed To Suffer Without Pain Medication
Perhaps the most reprehensible form of elder abuse in nursing homes is allowing continuous suffering. This type of abuse is especially common to Dementia and Alzheimer’s residents. A recent study published by the University of North Carolina found that patients suffering from Dementia or other mental cognitive disabilities were 50% less likely to receive medications for pain than those who did not have these conditions. Many of these patients suffer from painful conditions as a result of nursing home abuse or negligence (bedsores, painful contractures, malnutrition and other serious conditions) and need medication to ease their pain. Unfortunately, their Alzheimer’s or Dementia prevents them from speaking up for themselves. This study shows that thousands of our elders are suffering needlessly in order to benefit unscrupulous operators who put profits over people.
