New Jersey Nursing Homes Reducing Reliance on Anti-Psychotic Drugs
All over the United States, nursing homes are treating dementia residents with anti-psychotic medication despite an FDA warning that use of these drugs increases risk of death in people with dementia. These drugs are being misused as an “easy way out” to deal with challenging patients. In light of this, New Jersey nursing homes have actively taken measures to reduce their use of these drugs. Many of the state’s nursing homes have implemented effective strategies tailored to meet the specific needs of individual dementia residents. As reported this past week in the Star Ledger, New Jersey nursing homes currently together rank fourth-lowest in the country for use of anti-psychotic medication.
Over the past 10 years Sugarman Law has represented several people who received the wrong medications or the wrong dosage of medications in nursing homes and other elder care facilities. Medication errors like these can be deadly and catastrophic. It’s nice to see that New Jersey nursing homes are improving their care related to anti-psychotic medications.
