If You Suspect Nursing Home Abuse, Act Immediately!

It’s extremely upsetting and often very difficult to believe that the people you have entrusted to care for your elderly loved one are neglecting or abusing them. Unfortunately it happens more than any of us wants to believe. That’s why you must notify the nurse in charge, director of nursing or facility administrator right away if something seems wrong with the care your mother, father or other family remember is receiving. .

Sometimes, though, families find out what’s really going on too late. Such is the case of an Illinois nursing home patient. She died on July 7, 2013 after being a resident at the Caseyville Nursing and Rehab Center from March 13 to June 25 of that year. Only after the woman passed away did the family discover that her death was caused by the neglect and abuse she endured during her time at the center.

According to a Complaint filed by the estate’s administrator, Edward McDonald, in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Ill. against the nursing home, “the center was negligent and careless in a multitude of ways in violation of the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act.” It is believed that Evelyn McDonald sustained “multiple open wounds, dehydration, malnutrition, weight loss, sepsis with multiple organ dysfunction and failure, as well as other conditions that caused and contributed to her death.”

The family is seeking damages for McDonald’s pain and suffering, medical expenses and wrongful death. Beyond the money damages the legal system allows, they are determined to hold the facility accountable so that this does not happen to others.
