Aides Accused of Abusing 93-Year-Old Nursing Home Resident
According to local authorities, two nursing home aides in Sharon, Massachusetts stand accused of physically abusing an unnamed 93-year-old woman. Police say the woman is a resident of the Wingate at Sharon nursing home facility. The abuse was reported to police by the victim’s family resulting in a thorough investigation. The investigation conducted by a Norfolk County officer and detective resulted in Brockton residents Domingas Teixeria, 61, and Leonice Jean Paul Bien-Aime, 49, being summoned to to court. They stand accused of assault and battery of a person over the age of 60.
Norfolk Count police are working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on the case. Police stated that the management of the Wingate facility has been cooperative during the investigation, expressing shock and taking steps to prevent this kind of incident from repeating itself. Wingate management released the following statement:
“Upon hearing this deeply upsetting news, we moved swiftly to terminate the two employees involved, conduct a full investigation and work with the authorities. We have brought in a counselor to support the resident and family and are re-educating all of our staff on appropriate and compassionate patient care. We are confident that this is an isolated incident, because we know our dedicated staff members who work hard every day to ensure the safety and dignity of the residents for whom they care. Nonetheless, it is heartbreaking.”
