Neglected Nursing Home Patient Attacked by Ants, 3 Arrested
Officials with the Alabama State Attorney General’s office are reporting that an 84-year-old bedridden woman at a nursing home in Centre, Alabama was bitten by ants over 100 times while she was left neglected for over 11 hours. This incident has led to the arrest of three nursing home employees. Kacey Allen, 28 and Shawna Rogers, 26 two certified nursing assistants as well as Michele Curry, 42, a licensed practical nurse. According to Steven T. Marshall, the Alabama Attorney General, the three women were charged with second-degree elder abuse and neglect.
The nursing staff arrested were responsible for the victim’s care throughout the night and were tasked with checking on victim. An investigation revealed surveillance footage confirming that the women had not entered the victim’s room, even though they falsely signed onto her chart as if that had checked on her multiple times. An Administrator at the nursing home, Cindy Cline, states that the nursing home staff in question were “immediately relieved of duty” and once the victim was discovered, officials “immediately intervened”. Cline said, “we regret that this happened, and we were shocked as anyone else. We’ll continue to strive to provide excellent care to our residents.”
Nursing home neglect and abuse is all too common. That we hear about it all the time though, does NOT make it acceptable! It’s a trend of abuse that has been steadily on the rise due to a variety of factors, such as understaffed nursing homes and big nursing home companies putting PROFITS OVER PEOPLE. There is no excuse for this kind of negligence.
