Family Heartbroken After Grandma’s Abuse by Nursing Home Goes Viral
Amber De Hoyos was browsing through social media websites when she stumbled upon a viral post about her own grandmother who was a resident at Legend Oak Nursing Center in San Antonio, Texas. The social media post came from a person who reportedly visited the Legend Oak Nursing Center where De Hoyos’ grandmother resides. The visitor noticed the elderly woman sitting in her wheelchair in a dazed state. The victim, who De Hoyos immediately recognized as her grandmother, was covered in her own vomit. After several hours of not being treated, the visitor asked a Legend Oak employee when the woman would be cleaned up. The staff member allegedly told the visitor, “when we have time.” The visitor was so outraged at the unacceptable treatment of the woman that she snapped a photograph and posted about the incident online. When Amber De Hoyos eventually saw the post, she was heartbroken. De Hoyos explains that she had no idea that her grandmother was being treated in such a way at the facility.
Devin Brewer, Legend Oaks’ Administrator, confirmed to media outlets that the incident is under investigation. The center later posted a statement explaining that they cannot confirm whether the visitor’s viral post is truthful or not. The picture obviously suggests abuse and neglect, but it remains unclear whether it is an accurate depiction of the facility’s treatment of their residents or or not. Health and Human Services has now teamed up with investigators to investigate the situation. De Hoyos is telling her story in the hopes that other citizens will take extreme care to look after their vulnerable loved ones. She explains: “This could happen to anybody.”
